What does packaging mean?

There are many terms around the topic of packaging and cartons, which are used in different ways. But which term stands for what and when is it used?

• Packed goods: goods to be packed/ shipped
• Packaging: container in which the goods are shipped. E.g. box, carton, container, carton box.
• Packing: Sum of packaged goods and packaging material
• Packing aids: Everything that is added to the packing material to secure the packaged goods, e.g. packing tape, filling materials such as padding or blanks.
• Packaging: Sum of packaging material and packaging aids

The German Packaging Ordinance differentiates packaging materials into five different categories:

• Transport packaging: Packaging that is mainly used for the transport of packaged goods. For example, drums, canisters, boxes, bags, cardboard boxes or pallets.
• Sales packaging: Packaging that is offered as a sales unit. It serves to protect the goods and guarantees that the packaged goods are handed over safely to the end consumer.
• Outer packaging: Packaging that is used in addition to sales packaging. For example, wrappings such as blister packs or films.
• Service packaging: Sales packaging that is used to directly pack the packaged goods at the retailer. For example, pizza boxes, bakery bags or beverage cups.
• Packaging for goods containing pollutants: are treated separately, there are special legal regulations regarding their use and disposal.

WHICH CUSTOM PACKAGING IS PARTICULARLY POPULAR

Customized packaging is individually manufactured packaging such as folding boxes, shipping cartons or laminate tubes. Thanks to the individual adaptation to the size, weight and nature of the packaged goods, space and money can be saved. Our labels are another eye-catcher.

• Folding boxes are printed product packaging made of various types of cardboard. Thanks to the variety of shapes, all of which are individually made to measure, they offer a wide range of uses.
• Shipping cartons are printed or unprinted cartons made of corrugated board, which are particularly suitable as transport packaging or shipping cartons. Thanks to different flute thicknesses, the custom-made boxes are suitable for shipping goods with different weights.
• Laminate tubes are individually printed tubes made of different laminates. The tube size can be freely determined, also the type of cap can be individually determined, so the tube can be customized to the product.

WHAT TYPES OF PACKAGING ARE THERE?

Usually, packaging is divided into primary packaging and secondary packaging.

• Primary packaging is product packaging that directly contains the product, for example laminate tubes, food cans or folding boxes that do not contain any additional packaging such as plastic sleeves on the inside.
• Secondary packaging is outer packaging that contains the packaged goods packed in primary packaging. Often, there are several primary packagings, which is why secondary packaging is also referred to as collective packaging. Shipping cartons in particular are often used as secondary packaging. However, folding boxes can also be used as secondary packaging, for example as outer packaging for laminate tubes or products packed in plastic.

WHICH PACKAGING IS SUITABLE FOR GOODS SHIPMENTS?

Shipping cartons are best suited for goods shipments. They are made of corrugated board and are therefore on the one hand very stable and on the other hand very robust and resistant. Shipping cartons are often used as secondary packaging, since the product inside usually still has primary packaging.

Thanks to the production from corrugated cardboard, the shipping boxes are very robust and protect the product from various transport stresses such as environmental influences, rearrangements or manipulations.

You have the option to order shipping boxes for goods shipments printed or unprinted, the unprinted boxes are made of brown corrugated cardboard and can be provided with labels for marking or decoration, for example. Printed shipping boxes are also made of corrugated cardboard, but only the inner surface is brown, the outer surface is white. You can have the boxes printed with your desired motif. For example, with your logo, an advertising message or information about the shipment.

CUSTOMIZED PACKAGING IS ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?

Customized packaging is more environmentally friendly than simple standard-sized packaging. Rarely does standard packaging fit the packaged product perfectly. Either the package is far too large and additional packaging materials such as plastic air cushions or packaging chips must be used to prevent damage to the product. Or the package is too small for the desired amount of product resulting in the need for a larger amount of secondary packaging. These larger quantities of packaging, unnecessarily large packaging, as well as additional packaging materials, naturally represent greater material requirements. This leads to increased, unnecessary use of resources as well as greater waste production.

In addition to the increased impact on the environment, costs naturally also rise when too much packaging is used or due to increased volume requirements.

Customized packaging is not only more environmentally friendly than conventional standard packaging due to the material savings. The variety of materials is also environmentally friendly. All folding box materials come from sustainable forestry, and some of the materials are made from recycled materials. We use only single-grade cardboard and corrugated materials for our folding cartons and shipping boxes, making them 100% recyclable. Since all of our custom packaging is made of high quality and sturdy materials, the folding boxes and shipping cartons can be reused multiple times until they are recycled thanks to the grade purity of the materials.

Our laminate tubes can also be ordered in recyclable PP laminate upon request.

Our folding boxes are all manufactured according to the ECMA standard, our shipping packaging according to the FEFCO standard.
