In industrial packaging practice, folding boxes with tuck-in bottoms (also called Plug-in Bottom boxes or 1-2-3 bottom boxes) are mainly used to surround heavy products with a sturdy secondary packaging. Their surface also serves as printable information and advertising space on all six sides.

Typical applications for tuck-bottom folding cartons are in the packaging of glass bottles, outer packaging such as printer paper, heavy computer accessories and beverage cans. Whenever a "normal" tuck-in flap does not seal the bottom tightly enough and the product could slip through, folding boxes with tuck-in bottoms are the better and more cost-effective alternative.

The folding box with tuck-in base also fulfils several functions at the same time for the product inside. It protects the contents of the folding box from external influences such as dust, moisture, light or scratches. It serves as transport packaging and ensures that the products can be stacked and presented well on the shelf. Its surface transports information, holds advertising or can be provided with other secondary packaging materials, such as labels. Folding cartons and their contents almost always form a product unit and are perceived as such by the buyer.
